There’s a little touch rugby tournament going on tonight at our pitch: we’re welcoming Liberi Nantes athletes who are just about starting to set up their own touch rugby team. They already have an all-refugees football team, so adding a touch rugby team to that sounds just like an excellent idea, if you ask me.
La Liberi Nantes ASD ha come fine statutario quello di promuovere, diffondere e garantire la libertà di accesso all’attività sportiva a quelle donne e a quegli uomini che per i motivi più differenti, ma sempre e comunque drammatici e laceranti, hanno dovuto lasciare il proprio paese e i propri affetti, per scappare da qualcosa o da qualcuno che nega loro la dignità di esseri umani e la libertà di poterlo esprimere senza rischiare di subire ritorsioni, traumi e violenze, spesso inaudite.
Their name comes from Virgil’s Aeneid: rari nantes in gurgite vasto, a few swimming in the vast flood. The team they’re setting up will be a refugee-women only one, at least for the moment — I’m pretty sure everything will take off from there, anyway, being touch rugby a sport anybody can play.
