Earthquake in Abruzzo, Italy: how to help

Posted by G under Italy

Talking about buildings consolidation — now – is pretty pointless, so I’ll leave that post for another time (and, above all, on another blog).

What we can do now is help by / Cosa possiamo fare:

  • giving blood / donare sangue — please contact / contattare Avis or Fidas;
  • help out as volunteers / aiutare come volontari — please contact / contattare Protezione Civile c/o Prefettura di Pescara: (+39) 085 2057631;
  • giving non-perishable, non out-of-date food / donare generi di prima necessità — please contact /contattare Banco Alimentare;
  • donating to Italian Red Cross /fare una donazione alla Croce Rossa Italiana — some 200 of their volunteers are already there to help, others are on their way.

If you have any other suggestion on how to help, please post them in the comments here or on the dedicated FriendFeed room. A wiki page listing useful contacts has also been created in order to help.

  1. rectoscopy Said,

    dove c’era scritto Santo Stefano?
    ciao

  2. Giorgia Said,

    Nell’URl dell’immagine (ora non c’è più in homepage, però).

  3. Marco Said,

    Hey Tourists,

    Plan to spend some time in L’Aquila and the villages around, next time you’re visiting the region. Your money spent locally will surely improve the life of people there.

    See you there,
    marco

  4. Giorgia Said,

    Marc — that’s very sweet of you, thank you, only I’d wait a little time before visiting Abruzzo as tourists, not much, but enough to avoid being of hindrance to rescue volunteers etc.

  5. Barbara Faibish Said,

    My friend (a nurse) and I will be on holiday in May (13-25) and would be happy to help in anyway we can – building work, medical work, cooking, anything really.

    We speak enough Italian to get by.

    Would anyone who could use us let us know. We work hard and are easy to get on with.

    Barbara Faibish

  6. Giorgia Said,

    Barbara — that is very kind of you, thank you.
    Please try and contact either Italian Red Cross (email: urp@cri.it ; telephone: +39 06 42012525; fax #: +39 06 42870115) or Caritas (email: caritas.internationalis@caritas.va ; telephone: + 39 06 69879799; fax #: + 39 06 69887237), as people at Protezione Civile (rescue volunteers) said it’s better to be linked to an ONG rather than apply for volunteering as private citizens.

  7. David Ferrini Said,

    All Italians around the world unite to help!

    I am part of an Italian youth push around the world. Giovani Italiani Australia, AusItalia.com and Young Italians of QLD.

    My family are all Aquilani and we have hundreds of relatives there. I thank God that none of them were taken and pray for the people suffering.

    We Italians abroad (the 21st region of Italy) are organising events to fundraise from Brisbane to New York, South America and beyond.

    I call on all other Italians living outside of Italy to show their compassion and solidarity. Raise some funds, it can be a dinner, a drinks night, a raffle, anything!

    Please help Abruzzo. This affects all of Italy, not just the Abruzzesi people. Italian tax payers are helping to cover the costs.

    May God bless the rescue workers, the precious souls taken and all the affected people.

  8. Valeria Said,

    Hi – my family was there, all alive but lost everything.. I am still happy. I live in Holland. I would like to know if the SMS number is also usable from outside Italy – doesn’t look like it – but maybe someone knows for sure.. In case I’ll write to the Dip. Protezione Civile to know how we can easily send cash to them as many of my friends will never donate via credit card / online. Maybe they can make an international number, it will be much easier for all ages / people to help. Thanks for letting me know any info!
    Bless-
    V. Scimia

  9. Giorgia Said,

    Valeria — I reckon the SMS thing is not working from abroad, but there are many ways to send money to volunteers there, you can get a list of ONG and Protezione Civile accounts set up on that purpose here: http://terremotoabruzzo.pbwiki.com/Sottoscrizioni+pro-vittime

  10. Fiore Said,

    Barbara, David and Valeria – It’s nice to know that there are people all over the world who are willing to help. I’m sure that any help, small or big, will be warmly appreciated by the people of L’Aquila.

    Here’s also someone from Scotland:
